For the entirety of my coffee-drinking lif e, I have used white paper filters. Bleached, I suppose. I used to get the bag of 400 count No. 4 filters from Costco, but they don’t carry them any more. So I bought these brown ones from the grocery store.
I made the first pot with them today, the second pot of the morning. My first thought was, “This tastes like wood.” Apparently, that’s because the filter is made with wood.
They say it like it’s a good thing. I mean, all paper is made from wood, but it doesn’t usually taste like the tree. I’ll be going to the grocery store today to get some white paper filters and giving these away .

Good god man, make some proper coffee!

The bleached ones are probably just rinsed more before packaging (so you aren’t drink ing bleach ). Just give these ones a good rinse before brewing.

Amen! No filter papers. I have a couple of these in stainless steel. Use the cheap bricks of La Llave, Pilon, or Bustio es presso from WM.

I mean white paper filters are still made from wood pulp

Oh no no, got to grind some beans right before. I use Ethiopian Yi rgecheffe, if you like a chocolate not vs a vanilla etc. I can’t recommend that bean enough.

Yeah low quality brown filters kinda suck. There is a reason most coffee filters are white.
![]() 10/24/2020 at 14:59 |

AFAIK most white ones these days are not bleached—a t least that’s what I’ve been told by the marketing materials--b ut wood coffee probably has a future as a trend!

I know, but my coffee has never tasted like the filter before. And I know it’s the filter because I brewed the pots back to back with the same beans.

Bleached pulp is predominantly’bleached’ with chlorine dioxide, a much stronger oxident than sodium hypochlorite

Used to have one of these, but mine only brewed one cup at a time, so it was hardly adequate for work... I might go looking for a bigger one though that can brew a whole quart at a time

I’ve gone wire mesh reusable. Reusable plus I actually like the silt....adds body

We found a big one online but it shipped from Italy, it’s a ten or twelve cup moka pot. I have a vacuum bottle and when I make a bunch I put it in there and keep it in the fridge. It’s pretty close to espresso, you don’t need a huge amount per cup.

That’s exactly what I need in my life. I usually carry one of those vintage, US made Stanley bottles, with me to work, but it takes a good long while to preheat the bottle plus brew a quart and then fill it up, which means I gotta wake up about half an hour early everyday.
I f I had one of these I’s leave it brewing while I got ready and that was it!

My hot water gets pretty hot, I fill the thermos with that while I do other things and microwave the pre made coffee etc.. I got an insulated sleeve for my Japanese vacuum bottle and it helps keep the temp longer. The only auto one I’ve seen is kind of plastic-y. I’m not sure about it but I guess I would try it.

i make fancy pants coffee machines with built in grinders for the beans
and i drink.....
the cheapest instant coffee i can get
i call it plinkfizz

Instant coffee is horrible and you should feel terrible about yourself.
Not really, you drink what you like. I mix decaf and caf whole beans and grind for each pot.

You’re just hooked on the dioxin remnants in the filters, from the bleaching process to make ‘em white.
It’s not like there are any acids in the coffee to leach that dioxin into your brew or anything, is there?

heh. I should have seen that coming...
“Man, I’ve SEEN what’s inside those machines. You want nothing to do with that crap...”

Man, I love that La LLave. Hooked.

I raised the “dioxin question” for him in the other post-- us PNWers are sadly aware...

Heh, you do you. I prefer coffe e flavored coffee. Hot as hell, black as night and sweet as love. Well, only 1 sugar anymore since I’m trying to live healthier...
When working for Dunkin’ Donuts ~40 years ago, I read the coffee bean bag. One of the ingredients was c ocoa. It was the best store bought brewed back then, way befor e Starbucks (which is awful) or any of them existed. Don’t know about today.

The dioxin issue was pretty much eliminated by converting from Chlorine gas to Chlorine Dioxide, ironically.

Starbucks is awful, one of their employees told me they ble nd all kinds of beans together and they get old because they do so much volume. When I was working in the city I went to Peets even though it was a block further. I meant to say chocolate note, I am not a fan of vanilla notes in coffee. I once got a latte at a place overseas and it was magic, I looked at the bag of beans they roasted and it said Yirgecheffe, I’ve had it ever since. Those beans and a moka pot makes a very nice flavor, I sometimes just drink it as espresso.

The middle one I found in the compactor room of my building missing about 30% of it’s bits. [ At first I thought it was an antique motorcycle engine.] I bought the one on the right for it’s parts, which are not interchangeable . I found a guy in Italy, and eventually rebuilt both. I only use the Professional, the one with the gauge. Complicated way to make a cup, but I like the ritual, which once dialed in, makes a banging cup of espresso. La Pavoni is the maker.

I’m putting my faith in only some of the filters having dioxin.
![]() 10/24/2020 at 16:48 |

Get yourself a reusable filter, they’re great and you never run out of filters.

I pour water and ground up beans into one of these and coffee magically comes out.

Yeah, about that.....

I’ll defer there. I’m not following the Pulp and Paper Beat from the PNW paper mills —
I’ve moved on to how “hydro power is the greenest green energy” when it’s driving electric cars, because I lived for years in that part of the country. W here there was a sad realization of what the dams had done to the epic runs of salmon and steelhead we used to have in the Pacific Northwest. One guy’ s “clean energy” is another guy’s environmental disaster I guess.
Glad they fixed the dioxin thing anyway.

I am assured that my data is old and I should be ignored.
Besides which I moved to burr grinders and mechanical espresso extraction many years ago...

I’m not too worried, since we have a governmental agency that is tasked with protecting us from bad chemicals in the environment.

Kinda reminds me of an old Editorial Cartoon i saw years ago that alwats stuck with me (can’t find it on like)
An old grizzled guy sitting in a rocking chair “ Back in my day, we used to catch salmon by the ton! I wonder where they all went?”

The EPA delegates most of those powers to states, who largely rely on self reporting. There’s a reason cancer kills some 600k Americans every year. The Safe Drinking Water Act is also pretty light on actually protecting anyone, and allows for a whole lot of very bad shit to be present in drinking water. Fun Fact: the SWDA doesn’t apply to bottled water!

Not really and you can run it through the dishwasher.

Very few Australians would even know what coffee filters actually are these days. If you asked a young coffee drinker down here what it was they'd probably suggest it was a poorly finished face mask.
![]() 10/24/2020 at 18:47 |

I made that mistake before. I discovered that if you rinsed the filter before using it that it helped remove the bulk of the flavor.
